Not only business laptops, such as Dell's Latitude E6430s, belong to the T430u's rivals. Ultrabook or not, the T430u does not differ much from its bigger siblings in regard to shape or design. Its restrained looks do not exactly convey the elegance of a unibody MacBook; the motto "form follows function" comes closer. Like in most ultrabooks, the T430u's battery is not removable. Unlike the T430 and T430s, it cannot be expanded due to the lack of an UltraBay slot. The lithium-polymer battery features a capacity of 47 Wh, which is to achieve a maximum runtime of 6.6 hours according to Lenovo.

17-inch laptops are always welcome in the multimedia sector. Because of their big screens they are also often used as desktop replacements, providing that a strong CPU/GPU combo is available. Material processing makes a solid impression. Regrettably, the test laptop's chassis is not completely even. The right front foot hovers approximately one millimeter over the surface. Processor

Oddly, Lenovo crops the strong CPU ex-factory and prevents the Turbo Boost maximum of 3.1 GHz, which Intel's Core i5-3210M could actually provide. No matter if we ran a gaming benchmark or only let the CPU process rendering tasks in Cinebench R10, the processor never exceeded its default clock rate of 2.5 GHz. This phenomenon was also noticed in the demanding Cinebench R11.5. However, it is positive that the CPU maintained the default clock and did not throttle even after a longer period of stress testing. This intentional limitation is clearly noticed in most benchmarks. Compared with other laptops using the same processor, such as Lenovo's IdeaPad Z580-M81EAGE, Lenovo's G780 shows a poorer performance of averagely 10 to 20%.

We use PCMark 7 and PCMark Vantage to assess the overall system performance of Lenovo's IdeaPad G780. Low 1933 and 6715 points speak for themselves since the system remains below the expected level. Contenders like HP's Pavilion DV7-7000sg (2450M, GT 630M) with 2059 and 7161 points or MSI's GE70-i547W7H (3210M, GT 650M) with 2023 and 7038 points show the possibilities. Dell Studio 1747 battery

Storage Solution

Lenovo offers 320 GB HDDs with up to 1 TB in the G780 range. Seagate's Momentus ST750LM022 HN-M750MB is installed in the test device. It has a large memory capacity for multimedia data with 750 GB and spins agreeably fast with 5400 rpm. The HDTune benchmark tool recorded a transfer rate of 79.4 MB/s and an access time of 18.2 ms, which are average rates for a conventional hard drive. The burst rate of 178.9 MB/s is within a good range. The hard drive was always very audible and palpable during the benchmark tests, which is a drawback of conventional spinning drives. Gaming Performance

Lenovo's G780 is not a downright gaming machine in view of the installed components. Nevertheless, Nvidia's GeForce GT 630M is suitable for the odd, occasional game. We played our FIFA 13 and Anno 2070 benchmarks, representative of gaming. FIFA 13 ran smoothly and achieved at least 70 fps even in ultra-settings. The surface temperatures of Lenovo's G780 stayed within limits subjectively. The vital areas, such as the wrist rest and touchpad, did not heat up excessively even during full load; the temperatures ranged between 28 and 37 ¡ãC. The PSU's temperature of 32.3 ¡ãC stayed within an uncritical range in idle. However, it reached 52.6 ¡ãC during load so that air circulation should be ensured.

The CPU's core temperature reached a maximum of 91 ¡ãC and the GPU heated up to reasonable 84 ¡ãC in the stress test. Overall, these are not unusual temperatures that would explain why Lenovo omits the CPU's Turbo Boost.

HP is one of the few manufacturers offering mobile workstations - powerhouse notebook systems catering to the needs of demanding professionals - in their product portfolio. While Lenovo recently decided to drop their 17-inch workstation (thus only offering a 15-inch version), HP is expanding their selection. DELL XPS L501x battery

In addition to the 15-inch and 17-inch systems, HP now also offers the 14-inch EliteBook 8470w. While this smaller model brings portability to the workstation segment and the larger model is designed for flat-out performance, the 15-inch model offers a compromise as it bridges portability and performance. This mainstream-sized notebook also has the most configuration options. The spec sheet of the EliteBook 8570w lists three different professional graphics cards, three different displays, dual- and quad-core processors, up to 32 GB of RAM, a plethora of hard drive choices, and four different battery options. Case

The HP EliteBook 8570w uses the same premium and very sturdy chassis featured in the predecessor HP 8560w. The chassis is very rigid and the materials are top-notch - not surprising if one considers the expectations of its target audience. As far as look and feel are concerned, the 8570w is clearly a step above some of the competition (Fujitsu Celsius H720 and the Lenovo ThinkPad W530 for example). Thanks to the superior build quality none of the surface areas flex even when a decent amount of pressure is applied. The entire unit features a matte and highly resilient finish and the brushed aluminum surfaces (which have a slightly greenish hue) look very classy. The battery locks firmly into place, while the base unit features four fairly large rubber feet which allow the notebook to be used without the battery inserted. The hinge design is solid and the display itself resists twisting quite well - without any impact on picture quality. The display locking mechanism features double hooks and uses a good-sized (but still unobtrusive) push-button as the release. As far as overall quality is concerned, the HP 8570w is on the same level as the Dell Precision M4700, followed by the Lenovo ThinkPad W530 and the Fujitsu Celsius H720. Of course the high quality has a negative impact on portability: the notebook weighs in at 3.25 kilograms (7.17 pounds) with the 83 Wh battery. According to HP, the minimum weight of 3.00 kilograms (6.61 pounds) requires an SSD and an empty bay drive (a blank is inserted instead). Performance

Our review model comes equipped with the Intel Core i5-3360M - certainly one of the less attractive choices, since the EliteBook 8570w is available in an otherwise identical configuration with an Intel Core i7-3610QM quad-core CPU and Full HD display for about 300 Euros (~$380) more. In addition, our unit only has two RAM slots, which limits the maximum RAM to 16GB. At the time of this review, HP and HP resellers only offer models with Full HD display and the Intel Core i7-3610QM CPU as the top configuration - all the additional hardware components listed in the spec sheet don't seem to be available. At least the potential buyer gets a choice of all three graphics cards (AMD FirePro M4000, Nvidia Quadro K1000M, and Nvidia Quadro K2000M). Unchanged from the predecessor, the AMD FirePro constitutes the entry level GPU, whereas the Nvidia Quadro K2000M GPU is considered the top of the line. Processor
Aside from the (lower) price, the Intel Core i5-3360M certainly has its place in the workstation lineup. Since the frequency is a bit higher (3500 MHz), it can outperform the quad-core Intel Core i7-3610QM if the software isn't able to take advantage of multiple cores. In addition, the dual-core CPU consumes a bit less power (TPU 35 watts), which improves battery life. In the single-thread benchmark tests - SuperPi 32m (606 seconds), Cinebench R10 Single (5902 points) and R11.5 Single (1.40 points) - the dual-core i5 is able to outscore the quad-core i7 processor. Of course things change when several cores are being utilized: now the i5 can't keep up with the powerful quad-core processor. The i5 scored 12464 points in the Cinebench R10 Multi (64 bit), which is quite a bit behind the 20000 points (and more) the quad-core CPU is able to reach. The calculation with wPrime1024 also took longer by about 40% (469 seconds). When we ran our video conversion test of two movies (tasking only the CPU), the Intel Core i5-3360M-CPU took about 30-50% longer than Intel's Core i7-3610QM in the Asus N76VZ. We observed a performance degradation of about 20% when we ran the workstation on battery power. According to HW64, the maximum frequency is now limited to 2800 MHz (3500 MHz when the notebook is plugged in). The Cinebench R10 64 bit scores are now 4911 points (Single) and 10664 points (Multi), respectively. Removing the battery while the laptop is plugged in has no ill effect on performance.

System Performance
Overall system performance is a result of how the individual components (processor, graphics card, RAM, and hard drive) interact with each other. The HP EliteBook 8570w shows very decent performance and should be able to handle most workloads. Office-type tasks, picture editing, and conversions happen without major delays - although the latter would certainly benefit from a more powerful workstation configuration. We were pretty happy with how our review model handled the workload - especially when Nvidia's CUDA technology is utilized. The system's bottlenecks are the RAM configuration (since there is only one module installed, RAM operates in single channel mode) and the comparatively slow conventional hard drive. Both issues can be remedied fairly easily and cheaply. To make the RAM operate in dual channel mode, we recommend installing a second 4 GB module into the open slot. Storage Solution
The conventional hard disk drive (from Hitachi) only offers a capacity of 500 GB, which we consider the absolute minimum for a platter-based drive. Transfer rates, access times, and perceived execution speed are not really up to today's standards, despite the fact that this is a 7200 RPM drive. One of the reasons why conventional drives are still offered is the much higher costs of solid state drives. The EliteBook has several different options for storage - the best choice would be to replace the old fashioned hard drive with an SSD. In addition, a secondary SSD could be installed in the optical bay (or the old hard drive could be installed there instead). Another tempting option is to use an mSATA SSD in combination with the hard drive or a Solid State Drive. There are plenty of different configuration and combination options, which are probably mostly limited by the budget of the prospective buyer. One thing that needs to be considered is that the mSATA connection only operates at SATA II speeds, which might not make it a suitable choice for a boot drive. HP G62 battery

We tested the Nvidia Quadro K1000M GPU (which is based on a modified Nvidia GeForce GT 630M) when we reviewed the Fujitsu Celsius H720. This professional graphics card features 2 GB of RAM with a 128 bit bus and scores a bit higher than the GT 630M in most consumer benchmarks (due to the higher core frequency of 850 MHz). The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 of the processor is not used, since Nvidia Optimus is not implemented. The GPU scored 8116 points in the 3D Mark 06 test, 4978 points running 3D Mark Vantage, and 1200 points in the 3D Mark 11 benchmark test. The performance advantage of the Quadro K1000M becomes apparent when running applications which can take advantage of the CUDA engine (meaning the graphics processor is handling the load) - for example, professional 3D software like CAD. Compared to the Nvidia GT 630M, the conversion of Big Bug Bunny only takes about half the time - in fact, even the higher-end Nvidia GT 650M is actually slower by a few seconds when running this test. However, when working with WMV-files, the Quadro drops in performance and is now slower than the Nvidia GT 630M. In this case, the performance of the CPU (Core i5-3360M compared to the Core i7-3610QM) matters and influences the result. ASUS U56E charger

The SPECviewperf11 benchmark test evaluates the performance of different CAD programs. Compared to the Fujitsu Celsius H720, we saw differences of up to 16% plus and 25% minus (depending on the application). We think that the differences can be mostly attributed to the drivers used (advantage HP 8570w) and the performance of the CPU itself (advantage Celsius H720). When editing photos in Photoshop CS6, certain filters and 3D-functions are able to take full advantage of the graphics acceleration. Some of the filters - like "oil paint" - only work with the graphics acceleration turned on, others (like "liquify") recommend it. When we worked with "liquify", the differences in process time ranged from instantaneous (just GPU) to 15 seconds (just CPU). Toshiba Portege M800 battery

When the laptop is running on battery, the CPU frequency drops slightly and performance declines by about 20%. Consequently, the score for Cinebench R10 OpenGL Shading is now 5799 points instead of 6721 points.

Gaming Performance
As far as the suitability of this workstation for playing games is concerned, we can expect a similar result as with the Nvidia GT 630M GPU, although performance is a bit better due to the higher frequency of the Quadro K1000M. For most current games, medium and low settings are needed to allow for a high frame rate and a decent experience while playing. Dell Inspiron 1545 battery

System Noise
In order to get the cooling fan to stop spinning once in a while, it is necessary to change an option in the BIOS - otherwise the fan is on at all times. Even when the cooling system is silent, the hard drive is not: we measured 32.5 dB(A), which makes the hard drive sound like yet another fan. A solid state drive or a less noisy hard drive could improve this situation. When the workload is increased beyond just checking emails, document reading, and internet surfing, system noise increases to a pretty audible 34.7 dB(A). Full load causes the noise level to top out at 49.4 dB(A) - annoying even after a short amount of time. The DVD optical drive is also not really quiet at 37.2 dB(A), which can disrupt quiet movie passages. SONY VGP-BPL22

Temperature
Since the cooling system is active at all times (unless the aforementioned BIOS setting is changed), the temperatures of the workstation are well controlled. Even after extended periods of load, we never measured more than 38 ¡ãC (100.4 ¡ãF) even at the surface area above the cooling fan exhaust. Even a higher performance version of the workstation should not tax the cooling capabilities too much. Speakers
The speakers, which are located on the front, produce fairly balanced and undistorted sound as well as decent mids and bass. Even this solution can't come close to the sound external speakers retailing for 10 Euros (less than $15) are capable of, but overall the quality is better than average. Battery Life

Power consumption
Minimum power consumption of the system is 15.8 watts; the maximum under load is 88.1 watts. The Intel HD Graphics GPU, which is not used, could definitely improve power consumption, especially during low load levels and idle and lead to longer battery life when the user is performing office-type tasks. The battery life is still quite decent, despite the performance-oriented Nvidia Quadro K1000M. The reasons are the energy efficiency of the GPU on one hand and the high capacity of the lithium battery (83 Wh) on the other. The EliteBook lasted over 6 hours during our Battery Eater Readers Test (screen brightness on its lowest setting, power saver profile, all wireless components off). When we ran the realistic WLAN surf test (brightness set to 141 cd/m², power saver profile) and the DVD playback test, the notebook shut down after about 4 hours in both cases. During the Battery Eaters Classic Test (all wireless modules on, display at maximum brightness, performance profile), the EliteBook still lasted slightly longer than 2 hours - a benefit of the reduced CPU/GPU frequencies while on battery. Verdict

The HP EliteBook 8570w is capable of performing most tasks very well - despite the somewhat low-end configuration. The only major point of criticism: HP didn't implement Nvidia's Optimus technology (our review of the Fujitsu Celsius H720 left us with a very favorable impression of this technology). As a result, HP's workstation loses some points due to higher noise levels, higher power consumption, and a reduction of the possible battery life. In addition, Quick Sync (Intel's hardware video encoding and decoding technology), which is built into the CPU, is also not available - some users who need to work with videos a lot might not be too happy about this omission. The reason why the HP EliteBook 8570w still managed to score a "very good" is due to the very well executed chassis, the exemplary port selection, the very good display, and ease of expandability. Last but not least: the price. Compared to other configurations, our review model of the HP EliteBook 8570w seems a tad overpriced. Maybe HP will change the price-performance ratio down the line - otherwise it might be better to choose a different model of the series.

Review Dell Latitude E6430s Notebook

The Latitude E Series is Dell's premier mobile business lineup. In terms of construction quality and durability, Latitude E models rival that of the popular ThinkPad T models while potentially costing users less at checkout.

In this review, we take a closer look at the 14-inch Latitude E6430s, essentially an E6330 but with a 14-inch display. In other words, Dell has barely changed the visual impression and has merely fused a 14-inch display onto a 13.3-inch notebook as evident by its narrower display bezel. The Latitude on hand is equipped with an Ivy Bridge Core i5-3360M and is configured at a retail price of about $2100 USD (or less depending on promotional deals). If configured with a Sandy Bridge i3-2350M with reduced options, the E6430s can be had for a base price of $830. In either case, users will be paying a bit more than usual for similar hardware wrapped in a smaller 13.3-inch footprint. The design style of the Latitude E Series has changed little throughout the years which has naturally led to its recognizable looks and colors. The E6430s sports everything users have come to expect from a high-end Latitude E model including the smooth brushed metal surfaces, matte display and Dell's trademarked Tri-Metal chassis. There is otherwise very little to complain about the case in terms of quality as it has remained unscathed from the E6330. Performance

The E6430s under review houses the super-speedy standard-voltage 2.8 GHz i5-3360M, which should be more than enough for the everyday home or business user. Users can opt for the previous generation i3-2350M or up to an Ivy Bridge i7-3520M for even more power. The dual-core i5-3360M in this case idles at 1200 MHz with Turbo Boost potential up to 3.3 GHz for both active cores. See here for more information on the i5-3360M. As usual, the Ivy Bridge chipset includes the built-in Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU. The integrated graphics core idles at 350 MHz and is rated at 650 MHz with up to 1200 MHz Turbo Boost. But, as seen in the graphics stress test below, the HD 4000 in the E6430s has no trouble maintaining its maximum Turbo Boost speeds even under stressful circumstances. For RAM, the reviewed model is equipped with two DDR3 PC3-12800 modules, 1 x 2 GB and 1 x 4 GB from Hynix and Samsung, respectively, for a total of 6 GB. DPC Latency recorded recurring latency spikes even with wireless radios disabled, which leaves us to believe that one or more of Dell's background services may be responsible for the peaks.

System upgradeability is very friendly and familiar to those who have owned a Dell Latitude in the past. The system drive can be removed with just a couple of screws and everything else from the RAM to the CPU heatsink are exposed by removing an additional set of Philips screws. Business-class notebooks are typically more open to end-user serviceability and the E6430s is no exception. The synthetic CPU-oriented benchmarks place the i5-3360M in line with (if not a little higher than) other notebooks sporting the same CPU. For example, the strong Turbo Boost sustainability of the E6430s has ranked the i5-3360M higher on average than similarly equipped notebooks (such as the Fujitsu Lifebook E782 and HP EliteBook 8570w) in raw benchmarks such as Cinebench R11 and Super Pi. Though not significant in day-to-day performance, it is nonetheless very appealing that users can get the full processing potential of the CPU in the E6430s. Compared to the previous generation Sandy Bridge lineup, the i5-3360M performs in a very similar level to the i7-2640M, one of the fastest dual-core Sandy Bridge CPUs available.

System Performance

System performance according to PCMark Vantage and PCMark 7 is similar to the Acer Aspire V3 (i7-3610QM, GeForce GT 650M) and MSI GT70 (i7-3610QM, GeForce GTX 670M), both of which are gaming or multimedia notebooks. The fast SATA III SSD is responsible for most of the points that make up the high scores as both the PCMark benchmarks are easily swayed by dedicated solid-state drives.

As an example, the reviewed ThinkPad T430 included a 500 GB HDD and no SSD. Despite having a faster i7-3520M CPU, its PCMark Vantage and PCMark 7 scores are both around half of that of the Latitude E6430s. Operations and applications are smooth and much more speedy on the Dell should the user equip it with a dedicated SSD. The manufacturer does offer secondary HDDs via the Modular bay for more storage if needed.

 

Storage Devices

Although a number of drive options are available (5400/7200 RPM HDDs up to 750 GB and SSDs up to 256 GB), most come with encryption (FDE/SED) FIPS support and accelerometer sensors to protect data from accidental drops. The equipped Samsung PM830 operates at SATA III speeds and is in fact also found in a number of other Dell notebooks (including the E6330 and Alienware M14x R2). As such, results from Crystal Disk Mark and AS SSD are similar for the E6430s.

We attempted to install a Renice X5 mSATA drive onto the available WWAN slot, but Windows was unable to recognize the drive.

Out of the theoretical 128 GB of total storage space, 752 MB is reserved for recovery and 110.47 GB is immediately available in the C: drive. See here for our growing HDD/SSD comparison list.

 

Gaming Performance
Gaming performance is good for an integrated GPU as the HD 4000 boasts scores of 685 points and 10.8 FPS in 3DMark 11 and Unigine Heaven, respectively. Though low when compared to mid- and high-end GPUs, the HD 4000 in the E6430s scores above the majority of most other HD 4000 GPUs on other Ivy Bridge processors. An extreme example is the recently reviewed Lenovo Yoga 13, whose integrated HD 4000 graphics performs feebly when paired with its ULV Core i5-3317U.

In practice, the E6430s produced marginally better frame rates in the tested games. For example, the average HD 4000 runs Starcraft 2 at about 119 and 26 FPS on Low and Medium, respectively, while the E6430s was able to run the same benchmark scene at 125 and 31 FPS. Although a noticeable bump, most of today's intensive titles are still off-limits to the HD 4000 when playing on anything higher than Medium settings. Dell BTYAVG1 charger

The E6430s expresses a wide range of noise levels depending on the workload. When idle or under light loads, the Dell is essentially silent to the user sitting from a normal distance away. On higher loads, the notebook is not afraid to be loud when applications demand the horsepower. For example, running Prime95 and FurMark for a full system stress produces fan noise upwards of 46 dB(A), as loud or louder than some gaming notebooks such as the MSI GE60 or HP Envy 17. Under more day-to-day applications, users will fortunately never be subjected to the loud maximum volumes. Instead, the E6430s will more often than not fall in the 32 - 38 dB(A) range during medium to heavy use. While still subjectively loud, this level is somewhat comparable to the maximum fan levels of the Latitude E6430 and E6420. The ThinkPad T430 and T430s both rank quieter by a couple of decibels when under load. Given the power and full Turbo Boost sustainability of the CPU (see next section), the maximum sound levels of the E6430s are understandable. Dell 90NITLILD4SU1 charger

Temperature
Surface temperature measurements were taken both on the keyboard and underside surfaces while the system was idle and then subjected to maximum load. Temperature when idle is not as uniform as we expected since one side is clearly warmer than the other by about two to four degrees C. The hotspot, which is nearest the rear left corner, is also quite warm and close to 30 degrees C simply from idling. Dell 906C5040F charger

Temperatures under maximum load do not stray very high from the idle values. However, this applies only to the right-hand side of the notebook as the quadrants closest to the corner hotspot can rise by a significant amount. We were able to measure a high of over 43 degrees C on this particular corner, an uncomfortable temperature for prolong skin contact. Users will certainly feel the temperature difference if using the E6430s on one's lap due to the wide temperature gradient between the two sides of the hardware. The exhaust vent in particular can emit very warm air when under system stress, enough to make skin uncomfortable if close to its vicinity. In contrast, the keyboard surface stays relatively cool compared to the hot underside, so hands and palms will fortunately avoid most of the heat. Dell 90NITLILG2SU1 charger

Stress Test
Potential throttling issues were assessed with Prime95 and FurMark to stress the CPU and GPU, respectively, with monitoring tools (GPU-Z, CPU-Z, and HWiNFO) active. When only Prime95 was active, both CPU cores were able to maintain the maximum 3.3 GHz Turbo Boost clock rate without faltering for the entire duration. Similarly, the GPU was able to maintain its maximum speed as well at 1200 MHz when only FurMark was active.

The system hardly buckled when subjected to both Prime95 and FurMark simultaneously for a full system stress. The GPU was able to impressively maintain its maximum 1200 MHz speed while the CPU settled a bit lower at the 2800 to 2900 MHz range. It's also worth noting that GPU power drops from about 20 W under GPU stress to 15 W when under full system stress according to GPU-Z. This appeared to have no effect on either the core or memory clock rates.

CPU temperature leveled off above 100 degrees C during the uninterrupted hour long full stress test. Despite the high temperatures (and maximum fan noise), the hardware and clock rates were stable throughout the entire duration.

We ran 3DMark06 under only battery power at the Performance profile setting to see if system performance becomes stinted if disconnected from the outlet. The end results produced very similar scores when compared to AC power, so full performance is available regardless of the type of power source. No throttling issues were present during the stress test.
